Thanks to aggressive self-promotion -- the unavoidable billboards on Interstate 40 advertising "Tucumcari Tonight" -- this legendary road stop in the interminable New Mexico desert still draws travelers to its classic motels on old Route 66, known here as Tucumcari Boulevard. Nearby, you'll find abundant fishing (especially crappie and walleye) and recreational boating at the popular Conchas Lake and Ute Lake state parks. The Tucumcari Historical Museum displays a truly eclectic collection of Indian and pioneer artifacts, much of it donated by local residents.
