Reputedly built on the ancient site of one of the "Seven Cities of Cibola," today it is not the search for gold but silver that brings visitors to Zuni Pueblo. Occupying the largest of New Mexico's 19 pueblos, the Zuni people are renowned for the quality of their inlaid silverwork, which often includes turquoise, coral, and mother-of-pearl. You'll find several craft stores selling silver jewelry along Route 53. Zuni fetishes (miniature animal carvings) may also be purchased. Although attempts were made to introduce Christianity, the Zuni maintain many of their traditional rites and customs. While non-Native Americans are allowed to observe tribal dances, photography is strictly prohibited. The most famous ceremony, the spectacular Shalako Dance, usually takes place in early December. Amid the Zuni stone houses and beehive-shaped baking ovens, you'll find the Mission of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Originally built in 1629, the present structure is decorated with extraordinary, full-sized kachina murals created by a local family of artists over the last 30 years. The Zuni Museum Project contains historical photographs and tribal artifacts.
