This tiny resort town draws vacationers to its quiet charm and spectacular natural beauty. Chama is the western terminus for the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, the narrow-gauge, coal-burning, historic train line that crosses the San Juan and Sangre de Cristo mountain ranges to Osier and Antonito, Colorado. The railroad, with its old freight yard and roundhouse, is a remnant of the silver-mining days of the 1880s when dozens of similar lines threaded their way up the valleys and over the passes of the southern Rockies.
Chama hosts several annual festivals including the Chama Chile Classic cross country ski race in February, the Chama Valley Music Festival in July, and Chama Days, which features a rodeo and other events in August.
