This living ghost town is but a shadow of its former self when 7,000 people lived here, and silver ore brought in millions of dollars. The boom began with the accidental discovery of silver in 1862. Today, about 250 people live amidst the reminders of a much more affluent past. Among the landmarks are several large churches, the Lander County Courthouse, and a three-story stone tower, Stokes Castle, which was built by an eastern financier as a summer home. Altogether 11 sites are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
To the east, you can see ancient figures up to 3,000 years old carved into rocks at Toquima Caves and at Hickison Petroglyph Recreation Site. The Bob Scott and Big Creek areas provide hunting, fishing, and camping opportunities in the Toiyabe National Forest.
