This tiny, pretty village in the Carson Valley south of the state capital is Nevada's oldest permanent settlement. Originally called Mormon Station, it was founded as a trading post by Mormon merchants from Salt Lake City. At Mormon Station State Historic Park, you'll find the restored log fort and trading station that were built here in 1851. Exhibits at Genoa Courthouse Museum (1865) include the old courtroom and jail, a blacksmith shop, schoolroom, Indian artifacts, and a room dedicated to John "Snowshoe" Thompson, "Mailman of the Sierra." Other interesting buildings include the Masonic Hall, which dates from 1862 and 1874 when the second story was added, the lovely Genoa Community Church built in 1910, and the state's oldest saloon, the Genoa Bar.
