The Strip is about four miles long, from south of Tropicana Avenue to Sahara Avenue. From there it's another two miles to downtown. You'll find driving in Las Vegas fairly easy (and, in the scorching-hot summer season, preferable). In the downtown area, streets designated east or west are divided roughly by the Union Pacific Railroad, and north and south designations begin on either side of Fremont. Further south, the Strip (Las Vegas Boulevard South) becomes the divider between east and west streets. You'll find all major car rental agencies represented at the airport and elsewhere in the city. Much new road building is accompanying Las Vegas's rapid growth. One of the largest long-term projects is construction of the Las Vegas Beltway. It's scheduled for completion somewhere around the year 2017.

Bus: Citizens Area Transit (CAT) operates 40 bus routes throughout the city. Fares are $1.25 except for the Strip bus and express routes, which cost $2; transfers are free. The Strip route offers 24-hour service, while most other routes shut down by 1:30 AM. For information, call 702-228-7433 or 800-228-3911. Trolley: The Strip Trolley (702-382-1404) runs every 15-20 minutes between Stratosphere Tower and Mandalay Bay Resort. Hours of operation are until 1:30 AM daily. Fares are $1.75 per person with exact change required. Vehicles are handicapped-accessible. Passengers may not board with luggage except for light carry-on bags. Monorail:The privately-operated Las Vegas Monorail makes several stops along its four-mile route along the Strip from the MGM Grand to the Sahara. Single ride tickes cost $5; various multi-ride options are available. The line operates 7 AM to 2 AM Monday through Thursday, and 7 AM to 3 AM Friday through Sunday. Taxi: The State of Nevada sets the rates for all cab companies: a $3.20 drop charge plus $1.80 per mile. Meters will charge for time if you happen to get bogged down in traffic. It's illegal for cab drivers to be hailed in the streets, but virtually every hotel has a cab stand. You can also call for a pick-up; some local companies include Desert Cab (702-386-9102) and Whittlesea Taxi (702-384-6111).
