Las Vegas touts itself as the "Entertainment Capital of the World." This
is no exaggeration. On any given night, you can catch star performances or
take in one of the many variety extravaganzas that constantly pack the
showrooms of the casino/hotels. It's easy to find out who's playing where --
it's usually emblazoned across the desert sky in neon.
Nightclubbing has become a big trend among the larger establishments, and
many casinos now offer dancing and drinking plus live or deejay-spun music
into the wee hours. There's the House of Blues, with their national brand of
rock and blues performers, at Mandalay Bay, La Scena, where high-energy dance tunes are played live in a range of
styles, at The Venetian, and Studio 54, named for the icon of New York '80s disco, at the MGM Grand -- and that barely scratches the surface. Visitors to Vegas will have few problems finding something to do when the
sun goes down, or any other time of day, for that matter.
If the pace of constant gaming and floor shows gets a tad too frenetic,
there are lots of places where Las Vegas locals go to unwind. Blues fans can
get their fix at the nationally renowned Sand Dollar Blues Lounge Tuesday
through Sunday. If you'd rather sway to big band rhythms, stop by Pogo's
Tavern on a Friday night. The music begins at 9 PM at this dark-paneled,
warm-hearted bar. The Crown & Anchor provides homesick Brits and overwhelmed
Anglophiles with a taste of England amidst all the lights and action. This
is the place to wash down great pub food with a hefty pint or two.
