If you're looking for something other than casino gambling, Reno offers plenty of alternatives for passing the time, including a lively club and music scene — hip touring bands can be seen frequently at the Green Room; local and touring bands also mix it up at XOXO; Club Underground gets illusionists, dance parties, and heavy metal rockers into the act; and Fridays and Saturdays are live music nights at Abby's Highway 40.
Cowboys and cowgirls should head to Sparks and the Pure Country Dancehall and Saloon, where the name says it all. They have free dance lessons Tuesday, karaoke on Wednesday, and live bands Friday and Saturday nights.
At the Eldorado Hotel and Casino, you'll find eight different restaurants, enormous gaming facilities, an intimate cabaret, and a 580-seat showroom for musical extravanganzas. The casino's brewpub, The Brew Brothers, can also be a pleasant diversion; they have live rock and blues bands on the weekends.
At the Atlantis Casino, you'll find seven different eateries, a full casino floor, a cabaret stage featuring mostly local talent, and a Grand Ballroom where touring acts perform. In addition to gambling and restaurants, the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino (formerly the Reno Hilton) features the Garage nightclub where rock and rollers, R&B, and motown-style acts perform plus the 1800-seat Grand Theatre where national headliners take the stage.
While a fair number of well-known acts play Reno, be sure to check what's happening in Lake Tahoe, just 45 minutes away, where you might catch some superstars. For up-to-date information on the entertainment scene, pick up the "Best Bets" section of the Thursday Gazette-Journal or see the Calendar in the Sunday issue.
