Tonopah, born as a mining boom town in 1900, survives as a crossroads serving visitors and tourists passing through the lonely Nevada desert. Remnant mining and trucking add to the local economy. During its heyday, the town produced some five million tons of ore and was known as the "Queen of the Silver Camps." You can visit the Tonopah Historic Mining Park, which includes portions of four mining operations and Jim Butler's original mining claim. The Mizpah Hotel (1908) was the last major building constructed during the boom years and remains as a downtown centerpiece. You can also visit the Central Nevada Museum which includes displays of natural history, mining, railroading, and relics of the settlement period.
