Car

It is not difficult to negotiate Buffalo by car. Since the downtown business district (the center of which is Niagara Square) is not far from the shores of Lake Erie, which forms the city's western border, major streets originating near the city's center radiate diagonally to the east. Main Street from the Theatre District to the foot of the thoroughfare is closed to vehicular traffic, forming a pedestrian mall called Buffalo Place. Metered parking is not difficult to find in the downtown area; unmetered street-side parking spots are also available, but they tend to be claimed quickly.

Traffic generally runs smoothly except during morning (7 to 9 am) and evening (4 to 6 PM) rush hours. Canada is easily accessible via the Peace Bridge.

Public Transport

Light Rail:Buffalo's Metro Bus and Rail (716-855-7211) operates a light rail system serving downtown through the Buffalo Place pedestrian mall. Trains run both above and below ground between the HSBC Arena and the South Campus of the University of Buffalo. There is no charge to ride the train above ground, starting at the campus, but if you enter the underground station line that runs below the Theatre District, fare is $1.50 (the same as public buses). Transfers are free.

Bus:Metro Bus and Rail (716-855-7211) schedules over 40 bus routes to serve the Buffalo area. The base fare of $1.50 is supplemented by extra charges in outlying, suburban zones. Transfers cost $.30 to another bus, but transfers to trains are free. Major transit lines run from 5 am to midnight. More detailed route and schedule information is available from Metro.

Taxis:The cost for taxi service in Buffalo varies from company to company, but is generally about $1.80 per mile. It's possible to hail a cab on the street, but calling for dispatch is a better bet. Major taxi companies include Airport Taxi Service (716-633-TAXI), City Service (716-852-4000), and Broadway (716-896-4600).

Airport

The Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BNIA) lies approximately 10 miles northeast of downtown Buffalo. (716-630-6000)

Transportation from the airport to downtown Buffalo:

Bus:Airport Taxi Service (716-633-TAXI) provides a shuttle van service between the airport and selected downtown hotels. The service costs $15 per person and runs daily between 6:30 AM and 10 PM.

Taxi:Taxis are available outside the airport's baggage claim areas.
