Founded in 1799, Buffalo didn't see major growth until 20 years later when the Buffalo Harbor Company constructed the city's first real harbor at the mouth of Buffalo Creek on Lake Erie. When the builders of the Erie Canal chose Buffalo to be the canal's western terminus, business and building prospered. Today, Buffalo is known for its fine architecture, historic homes, and the nation's oldest designed public park system, created by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. Called the Nickel City or Queen City, it's the second largest city in the Empire State and the economic center of western New York.

Buffalo's days of heavy industry have receded but this rugged city has much to offer besides the occasional snowbound winter. The wealth generated in its heyday has left an indelible mark in the estates, parks, and major museums that dot its neighborhhods. The presence of thousands of students from institutions like the University of Buffalo and Buffalo State lends the city a youthful, vibrant energy.
The Elmwood Village district harbors a wealth of cultural attractions. The city's leading art institution, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, with its renowned collection of works by modern masters, is found in Delaware Park. Nearby, the Burchfield-Penney Art Center in Rockwell Hall offers nine galleries of 20th-century American paintings, the Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society has exhibits on the development of the Niagara Frontier, and the Buffalo Zoo houses many rare and beautiful wild animals. East of Delaware Park, the sweeping expanse of the Darwin Martin House Complex, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the early years of the 20th century, is undergoing a thorough restoration and reconstruction.
The trendy Allentown neighborhood offers many older homes, antique stores, art galleries, and restaurants. Here you'll see fine Victorian mansions lining the Delaware Avenue Historic District. Among them is the Wilcox Mansion where Theodore Roosevelt was inaugurated following the assassination of President William McKinley.
Buffalo's downtown centers on Niagara Square, dominated by a monument to McKinley, and City Hall, a 33-story art deco skyscraper dedicated in 1932. Its 28th floor observatory offers a panoramic view of the city and Western New York. On the waterfront, visit the Buffalo & Erie County Naval and Military Park to see an assemblage of World War II fighting ships, or go a little further south to stroll through a cattail marsh at the Tifft Nature Preserve; its nature trails and boardwalks are excellent for birdwatching.
Budding horticulturalists will want to see the impressive Victorian greenhouse at the Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens in South Park. It contains exotic flowers, palm and fruit trees, and cacti, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Also see the exhibits on astronomy, botany, geology, zoology, and anthropology at the Buffalo Museum of Science.
The city's cultural performance venues include the restored Shea's Performing Arts Center, for touring Broadway and other productions, and Kleinhans Music Hall, home of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. The city's impassioned sports fans head to Ralph Wilson Stadium in suburban Orchard Park for Bills football, downtown's HSBC Arena for hockey from the Sabres and lacrosse from the Bandits, and Dune Tire Park (also downtown) for triple-A baseball played by the Bisons. The newest entrant on the professional sports scene, the Silverbacks of the American Basketball Association, play at the arena at Buffalo State College.
Shopping is a treat at the historic Broadway Market (established in 1888), the area's only year-round public food market, with deli, bakery, and arts and crafts booths.
Summertime thrill-seekers head to Fantasy Island, located on Grand Island in the middle of the Niagara River. More thrills -- of both the natural and man-made kind -- can be found just a few miles downstream at Niagara Falls, one of the seven wonders of the world.
