The suburban village of Hicksville -- once little more than a railroad depot on the Hempstead Plain -- was settled by German immigrants in the 1840s and enjoyed popularity as a German-American vacation spa in the late 19th century. The nationally-recognized Gardiner and Anne Gregory collection of minerals, fossils, butterflies and moths, originally displayed in their private home, is now part of the Hicksville Gregory Museum. Housed in the historic Heitz Place Courthouse, the museum includes historic exhibits on Long Island life and a preserved jail cell.
You can also visit the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, whose doors are exact replicas of the Lorenzo Ghiberti "Gates of Paradise" doors in the Baptistery of the Duomo of San Giovanni Battista in Florence, Italy. The town was founded in 1648 when a Welshman bought 6.2 square miles from Chief Sachem Pugnipan of the Matinecock Indian nation.
