This town on Long Island's picturesque north shore was the birthplace of poet Walt Whitman. The farm home where Whitman was raised preserves his letters and manuscripts, first editions, and relics of his life and work. Over 130 Whitman portraits are part of the collection. You can also visit the Heckscher Museum with its displays of European and American art from the last four centuries. The Huntington Historical Society operates Conklin House (1750) and the Kissam House, where antique furnishings are on display. At the Whaling Museum in nearby Cold Spring Harbor, you'll find fascinating relics from the days of "iron men and wooden ships."
