Lockport, in the heart of the Niagara Frontier's fruit-growing region, was born with the coming of the Erie Canal. Locks that raise and lower vessels more than 50 feet from the level of the Niagara River to the level of the Genessee River are still in operation here as part of the New York State Barge Canal. The operation of the locks is easily visible in the center of town and makes for fascinating viewing. At the Erie Canal Museum, located in a room in a powerhouse at the base of Lock 34, visitors peruse black and white historical photographs. Elsewhere in Lockport, boat tours of the locks and canals are available and you can also tour a manmade cave constructed when the canal was built in the 1850s. The Erie Canal Discovery Center offers interactive displays and the opportunity to board a replica of a boat and experience a trip through the locks. The Niagara County Historical Society operates several sites including the Colonial William Bond House (1824) and various buildings with exhibits on pioneering, transportation, and early farming.
