Settled in 1709, this city was George Washington's headquarters toward the end of the Revolutionary War. Jonathan Hasbrouck House, where he stayed, has authentic early American furnishings. It was here that Washington created the Badge of Military Merit, the forerunner of the Purple Heart. There are 12 wineries within 20 miles. Storm King Art Center, which features a 400-acre outdoor sculpture park, and Mountainville Conservancy are nearby. For hikers and climbers, there are 20 miles of marked trails in the area, some offering spectacular mountaintop vistas.
In addition to restaurants at the refurbished waterfront, visitors can enjoy many ethnic and specialty restaurants on Broadway and Liberty streets, and do some shopping and antiquing as well. Art lovers flock to Newburgh's "Last Saturday" (May - October) and the Yellow Bird Gallery year-round. A ferry travels to Beacon during peak commuter hours.
