Originally founded by French Huguenots fleeing religous persecution in Europe, New Paltz occupies a pleasant rural setting on the western edge of the Hudson River Valley. On historic Huguenot Street, you'll find several house/museums (six made of original stone), a church and other buildings built between 1692 and 1890, with furnishings and mementos reflecting the generations of Huguenot settlers who lived there. The 135-year-old Mohonk Mountain House is one of several large resorts in the area. New Paltz is also noted for its branch of the State University of New York. Hiking, rock climbing, and cross-country skiing are popular activities in the Shawangunk Mountains ("the Gunks") west of the town.
