Palmyra's nickname is "Queen of Erie Canal Towns." Visitors enjoy hiking and biking the Erie Canalway Trail running from Buffalo through Palmyra. From the 1820s-1840s, this was the Erie Canal towpath. Latter-day Saint historic sites are scattered around this area: Hill Cumorah, where the Golden Plates were given to Joseph Smith; Joseph Smith Home, and the Sacred Grove; Martin Harris Farm; and E.B. Grandin Print Shop, printer of the first editions of the Book of Mormon. Also see the nation's largest collection of American jacquard and handwoven coverlets at the Alling Coverlet Museum. Additional attractions include Palmyra Historical and Phelps General Store museums.
