On the western shore of Lake Champlain, the Plattsburgh area has seen naval battles in two wars, including the first U.S. naval engagement. The Kent-DeLord House, British headquarters in 1812, has historical exhibits about that period. Museums in the area include several art galleries at SUNY Plattsburgh, Clinton County Historical Museum with almost 400 years of Champlain Valley history, and the Air Force Base Museum. Lake cruises, beaches, and water sports are popular in summer, while winter sports opportunities such as skiing and snowmobiling are a magnet.
