This major Adirondack resort community once served as a sanatorium for tuberculosis sufferers. Many health buildings dating from the turn of the 20th century can still be seen in the village. You can visit the cottage where Robert Louis Stevenson lived in the late 1800s. The Charles Dickert Wildlife Museum displays preserved examples of native animals. In summer, you can swim at the public beach on Lake Colby. In winter, nearby Mount Pisgah Municipal Ski Center is popular with snow enthusiasts. One of the two Adirondack Park interpretive centers is to the north at Paul Smiths; displays include exhibits on the human history and natural history of the mountains.
