Downtown Syracuse is served by Interstate highways 81 and 690, with the New York Thruway (I-90) a few miles north of the city. Interstate 481 forms a beltway around the east side. Erie Boulevard is the main east-west street. Salina Street is the main north-south street. Syracuse University is on the big hill east of downtown.

Bus: Centro buses operate from as early as 4 AM until 12:30 AM during the week with slightly reduced service on the weekends. A ride costs $1. Transfers are free. (315-442-3400) Taxi: Taxis are plentiful in downtown and can be hailed on the street. Rates are established by the city with the first mile $2.50 and $2.80 for each mile thereafter.

Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR) is about eight miles north of downtown off I-81. Transportation from the airport to downtown Syracuse: Aside from rental cars, taxis are your only option. Cabs charge a flat fee of $23.20 to reach downtown. The trip takes about ten minutes.
