This lovely town overlooking the Hudson River where it widens into the Tappan Zee was settled by the Dutch in the mid-1600s. Tarrytown and neighboring Sleepy Hollow and Irvington were made famous by the writings of Washington Irving, particularly the short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." See Washington Irving's Sunnyside; Van Cortlandt Manor at Croton-on-Hudson; 17th-century Philipsburg Manor, with operating gristmill; Union Church, with windows by Marc Chagall and Matisse; and Kykuit, the Rockefeller family estate (mansion, coach barn, and lavish sculpture-filled gardens). Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, where Washington Irving is buried, is next to the Old Dutch Church. Also, Lyndhurst is a magnificent castle-like mansion perched high above the Hudson.
