Founded by Dutch settlers in the 1660s, this Mohawk Valley city achieved its major success when Thomas Edison moved his electric works here and gave birth to the General Electric Company. The city's historic past is well preserved in The Stockade, a district of dozens of houses that have been in continuous residential use for as long as 300 years. You can also tour the architecturally-impressive campus of Union College where you'll find the splendid Nott Memorial, a 16-sided meeting hall in the High Victorian style. The Schenectady County Historical Society museum displays 18th century furnishings, toys, and military paraphrenalia. The Schenectady Museum and Suits-Bueche Planetarium has interactive displays on history, science, industry, and art. You can also visit the Empire State Aerosciences Museum for a display of historic aircraft and exhibits relating the principles of flight, and the Center for the History of the Electrical Industry, where the Hall of History contains over 2000 artifacts. Touring theatrical and musical performances are regularly seen at the beautifully-restored Proctor's Theatre, a gleaming former vaudeville house with a mighty Wurlitzer organ.
