Located in the historic Mohawk Valley, a major corridor for the movement of troops during the French and Indian War and the American Revolution, Herkimer played a role in both wars and later became a stop on the Erie Canal. You can explore the region's past at the Herkimer County Historical Society which operates three museums including the 1834 Jail. Nearby, you can visit Herkimer Home in Little Falls, the residence of General Nicholas Herkimer and the place he died following the bloody Battle of Oriskany. The Remington Firearms Museum in Ilion has both antique and modern guns manufactured by the famous weapons company. Rockhounds flock to an area just north of town to dig for Herkimer "diamonds," diamond-like quartz crystals. Visitors can also take a cruise on the historic Erie Canal.
