New York state's fourth-largest city lies snug against the northern border of its largest -- New York City and the Borough of the Bronx. Yonkers got its name from the corruption of a Dutch phrase meaning the "young lord," a reference to the Adrien Van der Donck who held the area's first land grant in the 1640s. The area's aristocratic past is recalled at Philipse Manor Hall, a stronghold of loyalist sympathies, that is now a museum of art, history and architecture. At the Hudson River Museum, you'll find Glenview Mansion, a restored Victorian estate on the National Register of Historic Places, exhibitions on art, history and the sciences, and sky-shows at the Andrus Planetarium. You can also see harness racing at Yonkers Raceway and, in Mount Vernon, St. Paul's Church National Historic Site (1692).
