Extremely urban western Long Island gives way to windswept beaches on the eastern end, but in between lie the suburbs, shorelines, multi-lane highways, and green spaces of Central Long Island. The Long Island Expressway (a.k.a. "LIE" and I-495) bisects the area. To the north lie the shores of Long Island Sound and attractions such as the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum in Centerport, the Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site in West Hills, and the Gov. Alfred E. Smith/Sunken Meadow State Park. Cornelius Vanderbilt's great-grandson William K. Vanderbilt II left his mansion, called Eagle's Nest, and extensive natural history collections to the public trust. The 43-acre grounds are open to visitors and include a planetarium and the Hall of Fish. Walt Whitman was born in 1819 in a native Long Island-style house that has been reconstructed to its 1890s appearance (and furnished in 1810s style). Very few changes have been made to the structure since the Whitman's left in 1823. Visitors to the Gov. Alfred E. Smith/Sunken Meadow State Park enjoy swimming in the sound, hiking miles of trails, and golfing. South of the LIE, visitors enjoy ferry rides from several points out to Fire Island National Seashore. Hiking, boating on Great South Bay, birdwatching, and camping are popular activities. Further inland, Bethpage State Park boasts five world-class golf courses.
