A bustling small city of just over 50,000 residents, White Plains thrives 25 miles north of Manhattan, serving as the gateway to New England and the historic treasures of the Hudson Valley. Its name refers to occasional white blankets of fog suspended over the region's swamplands. Just north of White Plains proper is SUNY Purchase and the Neuberger Museum of Art. This exceptional small museum is known for its collections of 20th-century painting, sculpture, prints, and photographs, as well as its African art holdings. Farther north along the Hudson, visitors find the Sleepy Hollow region with its ties to Washington Irving. Some of the country's finest estates, such as the Rockefeller's Kykuit, may be toured. Philipsburg Manor introduces visitors to the culture and economy of colonial New York in a complex demonstrating the milling and farming activities that took place there in the early 18th century.
