Historical attractions abound throughout the Allentown area. The state-of-the-art Lehigh County Heritage Center, which opened in 2005, features permanent and rotating exhibits that cover the region's development from the time of the Lenni Lenape to the arrival of German immigrants to the modern industrial and post-industrial world. To learn more about the area's first inhabitants, visit the Museum of Indian Culture operated by the Lenni Lenape. Major festivals are held here throughout the year.
In 1777, patriots hid the Liberty Bell from the British in the basement of Allentown's Zion Reformed Church. Today the Liberty Bell Shrine, complete with a full-sized replica of the bell, commemorates the spot. Along with other exhibits and artifacts, a large mural depicts how the original bell came to Allentown. Also, take a guided tour of Haines Mill Museum, a fully operational water-driven gristmill built in 1760.
With a plethora of area colleges, its no surprise that Allentown offers a wealth of cultural organizations and venues. The Allentown Art Museum, one of the best small arts museums in the country, has a fine collection of European and American paintings and sculptures, including works by Pennsylvania artists such as Gilbert Stuart, Keith Haring, and Joan Snyder. The Allentown Symphony Orchestra plays in historic Symphony Hall. The Lehigh Valley Chamber Orchestra also performs there as well as at the Baker Center for the Arts at Muhlenberg College. The stunning Zoellner Arts Center at Lehigh University presents a broad range of entertainments in three different theaters. You may also want to check schedules for Easton's beautifully restored State Theatre Center for the Arts, which offers musical, comedy, and touring theatre productions.
For a day in the sun, take a trip to Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom. This all-in-one destination has kiddie and thrill rides, giant roller coasters, games along the midway, live shows, water slides, white-water rafting, and for quieter moments, topiary walkways and a fish pond. Sports fans can enjoy summertime football courtesy of the Lehigh Valley Outlawz, members of the Great Lakes Indoor Football League, who play at Stabler Arena in neighboring Bethlehem.
In nearby Easton, visit the National Canal Museum, where you can ride in an historic pack boat on a restored segment of the Lehigh Canal and learn about the role of canals in American commerce and transport before the dawn of railroads. Then take the kids to the Crayola Factory, where you'll learn how Crayola products are manufactured and participate in numerous interactive exhibits.
