Founded by the Pennsylvania Railroad, Altoona expanded rapidly after 1852 when tracks through the Alleghenies linked Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Half-mile-long Horseshoe Curve, a famous feat of railroad engineering, delights railroad buffs who also enjoy the Railroaders Memorial Museum, a complex of railroad repair and construction buildings, historic cars and locomotives. You can also visit the Baker Mansion, an 1845 Greek Revival mansion with extraordinary interior detail as well as railroad, American Indian, and Civil War artifacts. The Fort Roberdeau Historic Site depicts a reconstruction of the fort built in 1778 to protect lead miners; the site also has nature trails, an archaeology center, and a 19th-century farmhouse. For amuseument park thrills, you'll find over 30 rides at Lakemont Park.
