A key outpost in the French and Indian War, Bedford is now a National Historic District, with nearly 200 buildings dating from before the 20th century. Historic buildings include General Washington's headquarters at Espy House and Anderson House (1815), an early bank building.Old Bedford Village along Old US 220 helps bring the past alive, especially for children. Artisans reproducing crafts of the period occupy authentic structures dating from 1750-1851 as well as re-created log cabins. Youngsters will especially enjoy the Colonial farm. At the Fort Bedford Museum, you'll find a scale model of the historic fort. You can also explore Forbes Road (US 30), a militarily important route during the French and Indian War, that crosses more than a dozen covered bridges in Bedford County.
