Famous persons who called Carlisle home include two signers of the Declaration of Independence, as well as Revolutionary War hero Molly Pitcher, and athlete Jim Thorpe who attended the Carlisle Indian School. The city is home to two colleges: Dickinson and the U.S. Army War College. The War College now occupies the Carlisle Barracks, where you can visit the Hessian Powder Magazine Museum.
Dickinson College includes the "Old West" building designed by Latrobe, one of the architects of the United States Capitol, and the Trout Art Gallery in the Weiss Center for the Arts. Antique mechanical banks, rare wood carvings, and other American folk art are on display at the Cumberland County Historical Society Museum. Opening in 2007 is the Army Heritage Museum with exhibits of artifacts of the soldier. Carlisle attracts approximately half-a-million visitors each year to 11 different car shows from spring through fall, hosted by Carlisle Events. (www.carsatcarlisle.com)
