Pennsylvania's fourth-largest city, a major industrial center on Lake Erie, is known for lovely residential areas and many historic sites. The lake is a popular destination for fishing and boating, with charter boat trips and cruises available. The beaches at Presque Isle State Park offer fun in the sand, and in winter, the lake provides great ice fishing and ice sailing. Docked at the Erie Maritime Museum is the official Flagship of Pennsylvania, the restored U.S. Brigg Niagara, which was a relief flagship of Commander Oliver Hazard Perry during the War of 1812. Just south of the bayfront, visit the Erie Art Museum, the Old Customs House, the Erie History Center, and the ExpERIEnce Children's Museum. Other sites to visit include Perry's Monument, Dickson Tavern, the Erie Historical Museum and Planetarium, Wayne Memorial Blockhouse, the Firefighters Historical Museum, and the zoo. The impressive Bicentennial Tower has observation decks open year-round, and there is a wide variety of specialty shops and malls for shopping (no sales tax is added to clothing purchases). Downtown you will find the elegant Warner Theatre (which hosts the Erie Philharmonic), the Erie Playhouse, and the Jerry Uht Baseball Field (where the Detroit Tigers' Class AA farm team the Erie Seawolves plays).
Nearby attractions include three lighthouses and a nearby countryside where you can see quaint towns and covered bridges. Waldemeer Park and Water World, an outdoor amusement park, is also close.
