This village was the first home of the Harmony Society, founded in 1804 and considered to be one of America's most successful experiments in communal living. In 1814, George Rapp, the society's founder, sold the town to Mennonites and moved the community to Indiana, where New Harmony was created and thrived for another ten years.
Preserved buildings include the George Bentel Building, Wagner House, 1819 Mennonite log house, and Mennonite Meeting House (1825). The Harmonist cemetery contains the unmarked graves of the 100 society members who died during the years the Harmonists lived here.
