Intended by its architect to be a "Palace of Art," the grand Pennsylvania Capitol celebrated its 100th year in 2006. Take a guided tour, and stop by the welcome center for interactive exhibits about the legislature and the lawmaking process. Across the street, the State Museum, which turned 100 in 2005, offers period rooms, has exhibits on natural history, American Indians, military history and much more. The museum's displays are drawn from a collection of more than three million artifacts.
At the Harsco Science Center, you'll find 240 interactive exhibits that will stimulate the scientific curiosity and artistic creativity found in everyone. It's part of the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts, downtown's all-in-one cultural destination, which includes the Sunoco Performance Theatre for live theater, dance and musical presentations and an IMAX theatre for large-format films.
Other attractions include the Pennsylvania National Fire Museum, whose comprehensive collection encompasses handsome hand-drawn and horse-drawn fire trucks, parade helmets, and uniforms, and the National Civil War Museum in Reservoir Park.
The city's front-door playground, City Island, sits in the middle of the Susquehanna River. Here you'll find riverboat rides, a miniature railroad, miniature golf, and rustic concession stands. The island-park also hosts the home fields for the Harrisburg Senators baseball team (AA affiliate of the Washington Nationals) and the City Islanders professional soccer team.
Skirting the Susquehanna downtown, River Front Park has five miles of gardens and promenades. Also on the river's edge, the 40 acres of Fort Hunter Park and Mansion preserve nine historic buildings once part of an early 19th-century plantation.
