More than 2,000 citizens of Johnstown were drowned on May 31, 1889, when the South Fork Dam gave way. After more than 100 years, some high-water marks still show. The Flood Museum has exhibits, including a 1989 Academy Award-winning film, detailing the flood's causes and its aftermath. To the northeast, at the site of the dam whose collapse caused the disaster, you can visit the Johnstown Flood National Memorial. Nearby, the National Park Service maintains the Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site, where railcars dragged canal barges over the mountains, helping to open the Ohio Valley to settlement. Johnstown is also the site of a remarkable Inclined Plane Railway that carries cars and passengers up a 71 degree slope to a residential area above the city. An observation platform at the top affords fine views of the valley and town.
