Downtown Lancaster is the center of Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Lancaster County is home to the second largest Amish community in the United States, with more than 25,000 Old Order Amish. But in addition to the fertile farmlands, this quaint city offers old-school charm with plenty to explore.
One bustling hub is Lancaster's Central Market, the nation's oldest continuously operated farmer's market. Stroll through the aisles of produce, cheeses, baked goods, and arts and crafts. Take a walking tour of the city and visit Wheatland, the former home of President James Buchanan. Other worthy stops include the Fulton Opera House, the Lancaster Museum of Art, and the Demuth Foundation.
Before heading out on local roads, remember to watch out for Amish buggies. Get a glimpse of the Amish way of life at the nearby Amish Farm and House, the People's Place in Intercourse, and the Landis Valley Museum. Or spend the afternoon at Dutch Wonderland, a family amusement park.
