While the old gag has it that, "It could be worse; I could be in Philadelphia," the reality is that Phillie's nightlife is anything but dull. And with so many clubs located in and near the City Center, getting from place to place is relatively easy.

The waterfront district is a major center for nightclub hopping. There are plenty of places to dance and among the most popular are Shampoo and Club Flow. Rock Lobster is also heavy on the modern beats. But, if salsa and merengue are what make your feet fly, head to Brasil's.

Dance clubs, restaurants, pubs and live performance venues all contribute to South Street's longtime party scene. Local bands play every night at Club 218, deejays keep the dancers on the floor at North Bar & Lounge, while underground and indy sounds make headlines at Fluid.

Fans will find the city's jazz tradition well represented, too. For straight ahead bebop, try Ortlieb's Jazzhaus. The shimmering beaded curtains and secluded tables in the Five Spot create an intimate setting for smooth jazz sounds. The atmospheric Zanzibar Blue in the Bellevue Hotel features late-night dining to live jazz accompaniment.

Acoustic and folk sounds will not be forgotten in Philadelphia. The Tin Angel is an intimate bar and coffee house where nationally known acts such Everything But The Girl can be seen. If what you've got in mind is a decent pint of stout in charming surroundings, stop by the Irish Bards, where, in addition to a tasty shepherd's pie, you'll find live Irish music on Sunday evenings. Those in a mood for the blues will want to go to Warmdaddy's where the spicy delights of Southern cuisine are also on the bill.

For stand-up comedy, the Laff House and the Comedy Cabaret, with several locations in the city and suburbs, offer up-and-coming and established comedians.

To get a complete listing of music and other events, pick up a copy of the City Paper, the free weekly available on most downtown street corners and in many suburban spots.
