Car

While public mass transit is good, having a car makes it easy to take in all the far-flung attractions this area has to offer, particularly the outlying Frank Lloyd Wright homes and historical sites. Cars can be rented at the airport and at several locations throughout the city, and all major agencies are represented. Be cautioned, however, that traffic can be heavy in the central city and public transit or taxi might be a better choice for small trips confined to the compact downtown and surrounding areas.

Like many older American cities, Pittsburgh grew up haphazardly and doesn't have a true grid system for getting around. People tend to describe locations in terms of their proximity to landmarks or sides of town; drivers should be sure to look for Wayfinder signs, a color-coded guidance system that is helpful when navigating this hilly community.

Public Transport

Pittsburgh Rapid Transit Map

The Port Authority Transit (PAT) system features efficient bus service and ultramodern subway trains; fares are determined by a zone scheme. Within the downtown Golden Triangle, fares are free, then go up to $1.25 if you cross the river. Otherwise, base fare is $1.75, with increases depending on the number of zones your ride covers. For information on fares, schedules, and hours of operation, call 412-442-2000.

Subway: The PAT subway system (the "T" in local parlance) covers a 22-mile route that links the downtown area with the South Hills across the Monongahela River. Trains run 24 hours but with less frequency at night. Note: if you board a two-car train, it is advisable to enter the first car as the doors of second cars do not open at all stops.

Trolley: Monongahela Incline (412-442-2000) and Duquesne Incline (412-381-1665) take you to the top of Mount Washington for sweeping views of the city. Rides on these historic tramways cost $1.75 each way and exact change is required.

Bus: Like the subway, bus fares are cheaper downtown and increase in price with the number of zones through which you travel.

Taxi: You can hail taxicabs at the airport and downtown in the Golden Triangle, or call for pick-up from Yellow Cab (412-321-8100). Fares include a $2.55 drop charge plus $1.61 per mile, with additional charges for time but not for extra passengers.

Airport

Greater Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT)

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) is just 20 minutes from downtown, longer during rush hour.

Transportation from the airport to downtown Pittsburgh:

Bus: For bus service (approximately $2.25), pick up the PAT bus route 28X at the lower-level bus stop. (412-442-2000)

Taxi: Taxis can get you downtown for about $40.

Limousine: A number of companies provide limo service and a trip downtown will run about $48.
