Set at the confluence of three mighty rivers and banked on all sides by lush green hills, Pittsburgh is a truly surprising city. Its long-renowned industrial grime has largely vanished in the last few decades, but the awesome measure of the city's early industrial wealth remains evident in outstanding cultural institutions and historic home museums.

Any tour of the city should start where the city started at the confluence of the rivers at Fort Pitt Blockhouse and the Fort Pitt Museum at Point State Park. Then, for a view of the skyline and the rivers below, board one of two 19th-century inclined trams for panoramic views from Mt. Washington. Professional sports venues, the Carnegie Science Center, marinas, and floating nightclubs provide plenty of activity along the river banks. PNC Park, Heinz Field football stadium, and the domed Mellon Arena host major sports teams -- the Pirates, Steelers, and Penguins.
Downtown, stop at the Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center. On the north side, don't miss the Andy Warhol Museum or the contemporary art on display at the Mattress Factory.
You'll find an extravaganza of culture in the Oakland area: see the Carnegie Museums, which include the world's first museum of modern art (opened in 1895) and a museum of natural history, where kids will like the outstanding dinosaur collection. Also visit the University of Pittsburgh Nationality Rooms, which display authentic furniture and architecture of 24 nations, the Heinz Memorial Chapel, with its stunning French-Gothic leaded-glass windows, and in Point Breeze, the Frick Art and Historical Center.
Youngsters will enjoy Pittsburgh's Children's Museum (housed in a spectacular 19th-century granite structure), the National Aviary, and the zoo, which features African savannahs and a tropical forest.
For a tour of the country side, head south where you can visit Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob, two outstanding homes designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The historic Neville House (which figured in the Whiskey Rebellion) and the Rachel Carson Homestead, also in the southern hills, make interesting stops as well.
Shop the unique locally owned stores in the Carson Street District, or the festival marketplace offerings at historic Station Square. You'll find designer retailers at One Oxford Centre, and other retail offerings at Fifth Avenue Place and Ross Park Mall.
