Here lives Punxsutawney Phil, the official groundhog of Groundhog Day, at Gobbler's Knob in Sportsmen's Park. Early German settlers brought the legend that if the groundhog sees his shadow on February 2, winter will last six more weeks. According to legend, no shadow means an early spring. (Alternatively, with spring officially arriving six-and-a-half weeks later anyway, a mere six more weeks of winter might seem a blessing, and that might be taken for an early spring; it all depends on your point of view.) The faithful have arisen early on Candlemas morning to rouse Phil from his sleep since 1887. If you can't make it for the big morning, you can always visit Phil at the groundhog zoo at the Mahoning East Civic Center and see the dozens of imaginatively decorated fiberglass Phils lining Punxsutawney's streets. The town also offers recreation for outdoors enthusiasts on the 14-mile Mahoning Shadow Trail where hiking, biking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are all popular.
