This industrial city has deep roots going back to the early 1700s. Three historic districts highlight its founding by the sons of William Penn in 1748, its growth as a manufacturing center, and its era of Victorian splendor. High above, on Mt. Penn, the seven-story Pagoda (1908) affords spectacular views of the city and Berks County.
You'll find a reconstructed 19th-century wagon works and displays on historic area canals at the Berks County Heritage Center. Vintage aircraft can be seen at the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum located at the Reading Regional Airport. More history, science, and art is on display at the Reading Public Library and the Historical Society of Berks County.
The GoggleWorks center, once the home of Wilson Safety Goggles manufacturing, now hosts 45 artists' studios, foreign film theater, and hot glass-blowing artisans. Gallery showings and jazz concerts keep the place hopping.
East of the city, you'll find the Daniel Boone Homestead, birthplace of the frontiersman; the 570-acre site includes the Boone house, work buildings, and hiking trails.
