Once dependent on coal mining and steel milling, Scranton revamped its economy when local reserves of raw materials, tapped for more than a century, started running out. Today this thriving business hub remains a gateway to the scenic Pocono Mountains.

Scranton's coal-mining past unveils itself at McDade Park. This former wasteland -- the result of decades of strip-mining activity -- has been transformed into a 200-acre preserve with miles and miles of trails, an arboretum, and athletic facilities. The park is home to the Anthracite Heritage Museum and the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour, where visitors descend 300 feet into an actual mine. On the other side of the city, you can continue your hard coal tour at the historic Scranton Iron Furnaces, four partially restored anthracite-fired iron furnaces dating from 1841-1857.
Don't forget to stop at the Steamtown National Historic Site occupying the former rail yards of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western. Among the treasures there are three historic operating steam locomotives. Steamtown also hosts the Electric City Trolley Museum where 12 historic trolleys from eastern Pennsylvania are displayed and used for excursions.
The city's cultural institutions include the Everhart Museum at Nay Aug Park and the Scranton Cultural Center. Located in the restored Masonic Temple, the cultural center presents Broadway touring shows and regional productions. Dance, classical music concerts, and theatre can also be enjoyed in plush surroundings at the restored Mellow Theatre on the campus of Lackawanna College downtown.
A visit to the Houdini Museum is a magical experience. Filled with witty and humorous exhibits devoted to the life and exploits of the master magician and escape artist, every inch of its wall space is covered with memorabilia.
Head to Montage Mountain for outdoor excitement at any time of the year. In addition to wintertime skiing, this municipal facility hosts musical concerts by major touring acts throughout the summer months. Montage is also the home of Lackawanna County Stadium, home of the Scranton Wilkes-Barre Red Barons, the Philadelphia Phillies' Triple-A affiliate baseball team. Sports fans can also find professional teams in neighboring Wilkes-Barre, where the Penguins of the American Hockey League and the Pioneers of Arena Football 2 play at Wachovia Arena.
