The seat of Bradford County, Towanda is located on the meandering Susquehanna River. Nearby, The French Azilum (Asylum) was founded on the banks of the river in 1793 by aristocrats fleeing the French Revolution and the slave uprisings in Haiti. Although none of the colony's original buildings remain, you can see restored cabins on the site, and the LaPorte House built by a descendant of the original settlers in 1836. Nearby, Tioga Point Museum contains memorabilia of songwriter Stephen Foster, who once lived in Towanda, as well as other mementos of local history. The P.P. Bliss Gospel Songwriters Museum is in nearby Rome. At the Wyalusing Rocks, you can climb 500 feet above the Susquehanna to an ancient Iroquois Indian signaling site. In Towanda is the Bradford County Historical Museum, housed in the restored Braford County jail. It has extensive geneological records visitors can use.
