Settled in 1781, Washington is the home of the oldest college west of the Alleghanies (Washington and Jefferson College) and was the one-time home of David Bradford, a leader in the 1794 Whiskey Rebellion. Bradford's restored house is furnished as it would have looked in the 1700s. You can also visit LeMoyne House (1812), a stop on the Underground Railroad that contains antique furnishings, paintings, and items of local history.
An informational brochure is available on the many covered bridges dotting the landscape of Washington County. The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum in nearby Meadow Lands displays vintage trolleys and railroad equipment and offers trolley rides.
Visit the Duncan Miller Glass Museum: outstanding glassware collection from 1870s to 1955. Plus tools, moulds and memorabilia. Explore the Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Museum of Rural Life: 16,000 year-old prehistoric campsite and 19th century village. (www.meadowcroftmuseum.org)
