This former Quaker village, incorporated in 1799, retains much of its 19th-century charm. The town is the home of West Chester University, the 1 of 14 institutions in Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Eduction. The Chester County Courthouse, a fine Greek Revival-style building, was designed by Thomas U. Walter, one of the architects of the U.S. Capitol. The History Center, operated by the Chester County Historical Society, features antique furniture, porcelain, and pewter and an extensive collection of grandfather clocks; the museum's History Lab features more than 40 hands-on exhibits designed to involve all ages in the fun and excitement of uncovering the mysteries of the past. At the American Helicopter Museum located at the Brandywine Regional Airport, you can see vintage rotorcraft and exhibits tracing the history of rotary-wing flight.
