Wilkes-Barre, founded in 1769 and the oldest community in northeastern Pennsylvania, was named in honor of two members of the British parliament who sympathized with the American cause. Once dependent on anthracite coal, the city is now a regional center of corporate and educational activity anchored by five area colleges. The city's dramatic past -- including its role in a little-remembered war between Connecticut and Pennsylvania that occurred from 1769 to 1785 -- is presented through the Luzerne County Historical Society's museum and historic sites. Victorian architecture is a highlight of walking tours of downtown. Five miles of riverfront trails along the banks of the Susquehanna interpret the city's anthracite heritage. Sporting facilities are found at Wachovia Arena, home of the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, and at nearby Pocono International Raceway and Pocono Downs harness track. Recreational opportunities include swimming, fishing, and camping at three state parks.
