A manufaturing center with many factory tours, historic York played a major role in the formation of the United States. For nine months during the dark days of the Revolution, this was the capital of the 13 colonies, when Congress fled from Philadelphia. The Articles of Confederation were adopted here in the Colonial Court House; you can visit a replica of the building. Nearby restored structures include the General Gates' House (ca. 1751), the Plough Tavern (1740s), the Bobb House, built of squared timbers, and Bonham House, furnished with antiques. York County Heritage Trust also runs the Fire Museum of York County and the Agricultural & Heritage Museum. Nineteen factories in and around York open their doors for public tours, including Harley-Davidson Motor Co., Martin's Potato Chips, and Hershey's Chocolate World.
