Miles and miles of sandy beach, two dozen championship golf courses, hundreds of tennis courts, and abundant opportunities for every kind of outdoor activity have helped make Hilton Head Island one of the most popular resorts on the East Coast. Although European settlement began in the 17th century, and many plantations and small farms existed here after the Civil War, it was not until 1956 that a bridge first connected the 42-square-mile island with the mainland. The town of Hilton Head Island was not incorporated until 1983. An eye towards ecological preservation has led to the creation of several wildlife preserves on the island including Sea Pines Forest Preserve, Audubon Newhall Preserve, and Pinckney Island National Wildlife Reserve, which offers 14 miles of nature trails. You can also visit the Waddell Mariculture Research and Development Center, where the commercial cultivation of marine life is under study.
