Clemson University was founded in 1889 by Thomas G. Clemson on the former plantation of his father-in-law, John C. Calhoun, U.S. vice president, senator, and Secretary of State. The 1,400-acre campus includes Fort Hill (1803), Calhoun's old mansion, which features much of its original furnishings. On campus, you'll also find the South Carolina Botanical Garden, where over two thousand plants grow amidst a 230-acre site which includes a lake, windmill, teahouse, gristmill, and greenhouse. You can also see art at the Rudolph E. Lee Gallery. If you are more interested in history, visit the Strom Thurmond Institute to see historic papers, rare books, and political memorabilia. A map of the campus is available at the visitors center.
