Right in the middle of the Grand Strand, picturesque Murrells Inlet (reputedly named for a pirate who haunted these waters) is a seafood lover's paradise. The local fishing fleet supplies fresh loads of oysters, crabs, clams, and shrimp to the two dozen establishments along the village's renowned Restaurant Row. Charter boats are also available for a day of deep sea fishing.
Nearby, be sure to stop at Brookgreen Gardens, where 500 sculptures are displayed amidst a lush setting of oak, azaleas, dogwood, and 2,000 other exotic and domestic species of plant. The gardens' wildlife displays include aviaries and an alligator swamp. Across the street, Huntington Beach State Park includes recreational areas, a wildlife preserve, and Atalaya, the massive Moorish-castle home of Archer and Anna Huntington. Nearby Bawley's Island is the country's oldest family resort area.
