This Upcountry community was founded in 1790 as the courthouse town for the old Pendleton District. Early settlers were a mixture of Scots-Irish farmers and wealthy planters from the Low Country seeking a summer home away from the heat and humidity of the coast. The visitors center across from the village green has information on the many historic homes in the town. The Pendleton District Agricultural Museum contains pre-1925 large farming equipment such as threshers, cotton gins, and hand tools.
You can take a walking tour of the historic district. Nearby, you can visit Woodburn Plantation (ca. 1828) and Ashtabula Plantation (ca. 1825), which features furnishings from the five families who occupied the estate.
